For beginners

What is square dance?

The caller speaks or sings the names of the calls. You follow them and dance with the group to the music.

Follow the calls

The calls have set names and movements, which you learn in a class. You don’t memorise a fixed routine: the caller chooses the order as you dance.

You don’t need a regular partner. A beginners’ class gives you time to learn the calls and find out whether you enjoy square dance.

Getting started

You learn the calls in class

The calls are in English. Their names and movements are explained in class, so you don’t need to speak English fluently to take part.

What happens on the dance floor

Moving to the music

You walk to the beat, turn and change position as you follow the calls.

Responding to the calls

You listen for the next call and react to the caller’s instructions.

Dancing as a group

Your next move depends on where the other dancers are and where they’re going. You need to keep an eye on each other.

What do the program names mean?

Mainstream, Plus, Advanced and Challenge are defined programs, each with its own calls and concepts. The program and prerequisites in a course listing tell you what experience you need.

If you’re new, choose a class advertised for beginners. If you already dance, look for the program you want to learn or practise.

Open house dates and introductory sessions are listed with the relevant course.
